I Hit 100 Followers on Halloween!
Thank you all for helping me reach this milestone.
Today is October 31. This will be my 10th story posted in October, after deciding to give Medium a go a little over two weeks ago. Somehow, I’ve made it to over 100 followers in just sixteen days. I had until December 31, 2021 to do it (so I can stay in the MPP, having gotten in before the new rules), and thanks to you all, I’ve met that goal two months early!
What’s next for me?
The next 30 days are going to be crazy. I’m in the last year of my PhD program, so I definitely won’t be attempting a traditional NaNoWriMo novel, but what I will do is try to post something on Medium every day in November. I’ve joined the publication “Promptly Written,” who post daily writing prompts, to help keep the inspiration flowing. (Shout out to creator Ravyne Hawke!)
Check out “Promptly Written”:
I will not be monetizing any short-form work, so keep an eye on my page even if you’re not subscribed to Medium. (Thinking about signing up for a paid membership? Consider using my affiliate link! I get paid a portion of the subscription fee for converting new members.) It’s likely a lot of my work will be poetry and other short-form writing this month as I try to finish up a major chapter of my dissertation. However, my goal is to make daily writing a habit again, not to make a ton of money “quick” on Medium.
For anyone interested, here is a rundown of my last two weeks on Medium:
- 10 stories written (including this one)
- 6 stories monetized
- 3 stories chosen for further distribution
- 1 story featured by Medium
- 1,645 views (as of 5pm on October 31)
- 515 reads (ditto)
- 157 fans
- $12.70 MPP earnings
What’s important to remember is that growth is exponential on Medium. More than 600 of my 1,600+ views in the last two weeks have been in the last two days. It’s been a slow build. Most of my earnings have been in the last few days as well. I had three stories chosen for further distribution in the past week, one of which was nearly a week old by the time it was distributed. I also just became a Top Writer in the LGBTQ tag.
I’m into total transparency: My article TERF Wars on Twitter has made me $6.69, by far the most I’ve earned from a single post on Medium. In a close second comes No Spoons or No Bones Day?, which was featured on Medium’s Twitter, at $3.24. None of my other stories have hit a dollar yet.
An older story of mine, The Dreamspinner Press Controversy, saw resurgence of views today thanks to being retweeted by a Twitter user with over 13k followers, KJ Charles. It’s gotten a ton of views, but they’re mostly external — not from Medium subscribers. This means that I won’t make much money from the viral tweet. But when is the goal to make a dollar rather than reach more people? I’d rather have 100 new readers see my work than an extra $10 in the bank.
In short, Medium is a slow grind. I don’t expect to make a lot of money doing this, but I’m having a blast trying to make it work. I’m glad I’ll have the chance to stay in the MPP and see my work earn a little money, even if it’s just a dollar here and there.
To my 104 new followers: I appreciate each any every one of you. I read your comments. I see your claps. I’ll respond when I can. I follow back when I think our interests are mutual. I’ll read your work, and you read mine.
Shout out to all my lovely followers:
