I make a point of not monetizing any of my poetry, short fiction, or articles under 1k words. I find that shorter works get more traffic when nonmonetized, and that it can lead to more follows and engagement (and reading of your monetized works) if you leave at least some things outside the paywall. I’ve only been on Medium for a couple months but think I’m having okay success at this strategy, making about $100/month now, writing only sporadically.
