I mean there's also a difference between rewriting a classic story or plot archetype like Shakespeare did and outright plagiarism, using someone else's words and ideas. Fanfiction is some of the most creative work, but it also acknowledges the IP it is inspired by. ChatGPT and AI art generators are literally just copying, there's no synthesis. If people can't tell the difference between being inspired by older art and regurgitating it, that's a huge issue. And I would hope that most people would care.

One of the demands at the Writer's Strike right now is to include a clause that prohibits using AI-generated scripts, and I've also seen a lot of authors putting it into their book contracts that AI won't be used to either edit or make cover art (the clause is usually something like "professionally edited by a human" or "a custom cover designed by a human"). I get using a bit of ChatGPT for tech writing here and there or an outline for a how-to article, but there comes a serious issue when being used for creative work (and even for nonfiction if it isn't used judiciously and thoroughly fact-checked and edited).
