I read a study once about how women use more exclamation marks than men, and are told to self-edit/remove them in order to come across as more "professional." As both a writer and editor myself, I find the idea that exclamation marks are inherently unprofessional a bit sexist, honestly: it's sort of like criticising women for their natural tendency to upspeak or their vocal fry. Forcing women to change our natural voices/speaking patterns in order to better "fit in" with our male peers is shitty whether it's in speech or in writing. Conventional (read: patriarchal in a western context) business language can be super exclusionary for both women and people of colour, and while I am a lover of grammar and style (yes, even Chicago), I'm wary of outright prescriptivism that doesn't leave wiggle room, particularly from historically marginalised writers.
