I think part of the reason the Stuckey scene works so well in context (and is so scary and dramatic) is that the actor is associated with comedy, so as a viewer, you really aren't expecting him to be that bad. Like oh, "he's the main character's jerk best friend, I don't like him" but not "he's a rapist". Modern films do this too by casting beloved actors to play off-brand roles, like Bo Burnham in Promising Young Woman. It's really shocking when our expectations are flipped like that, which is also true of the movie being marketed as a "rom com" but being quite a bit darker than the genre usually permits. I think it worked well, just different with those 30 years of perspective.
