I think there's research to suggest that prior to language acquisition, babies think in mostly pictures/feelings, and then there is a shift in most people toward primarily thinking with either language OR continuing to think with pictures into adulthood. But I was extremely hyperlexic (reading at two years old) so I don't remember what thinking was like before I could read, and can't confirm!
