I want more functionality for writers on the app as well; I'm working from home now, but when I was out and about more, it was nice to be able to write on my phone or iPad!

I hope the new stars aren't indicative of a larger problem, re: Medium needing new members. If they're losing money / in the negative, they might be doing a big push to shame nonpaying members into subscribing to try to recoup losses. I hope it isn't that, but I've heard Medium's current business model isn't the most sustainable... time will tell!
