It can definitely be a useful writing tool, especially for prompts, solving logics / plot holes, and even outlining. But you're right that the writing itself doesn't hold up, especially for longer work. It does better at nonfiction, but pretty bad at fiction and worse at poetry. The problem arises when businesses who normally pay for writers shrug their shoulders and say "good enough" because it saves them a buck.
