It’s certainly better than having all one-size images, but I agree that it’s not enough. I miss the other options too. And it’s ridiculous that we have to “hack” our way into larger photos.

Unfortunately, it seems Medium is changing their entire user interface (many people are already seeing the beta version), and the smaller images are definitely a part of that update. I think they’re here to stay, sadly, though at least we have this option (for now).
