My old supervisor once gave me an excellent piece of advice about a grant application: "If you get it, it'll be because you're brilliant... and lucky. If you don't get it, that doesn't mean you're not brilliant, only that you weren't also lucky."
There are so many mediocre writers getting seven-figure deals they don't deserve, simply because they put themselves out there and got lucky. Don't write yourself out of the running -- put yourself in the race! The worst anyone can do is say "no." (Or mean stuff, but let it roll off -- people are petty, clearly.) You might be pleasantly surprised.
