They say "money can't buy happiness" but what they mean is, "money won't make you happier once all your needs are fully met". Money does make people happier -- to a point. And that point is like 200k/year on average. Being well paid definitely leaves more room for happiness, especially since the country's high taxes cover a lot of the other things people spend money on in places like the US (healthcare, for example).
