I definitely think there's a cultural element. Flying with a German airline is so much cleaner and more efficient than, for example, American (or even Canadian) airlines, and much, much better than LOT or Ryanair. As a flyer on a budget, I frequently go for the cheapest option, which unfortunately often means sacrificing quality. It shouldn't mean compromising safety, however, especially since even budget airlines charge hundreds if not thousands of dollars per flight. I think we paid 1100 euro round trip each with LOT for our recent trip home. I know now to choose Lufthansa even if it means forking over an extra couple hundred bucks.
